I thought that I saw somewhere that MS Access can be used to generate
reports based on MS Project data tables. Does anyone have any information on
this issue?

Yes it can be.
You just need to figure out what data you want to return and write/construct
the appropriate query.
Before you start I recommend you read the document titled projdb.htm which
is on the project cd or any computer with project installed.
Then read it again a few more times.
