Discussion:
highlight constraint violations

I have a very large project that I am managing, and occasionally when I
reshuffle dates or predecessors MS-Project warns me that I would be
creating a constraint violation if I continue.

For one particular task, I *do* want to show a constraint violation to
show team members the impact of making a certain decision. I would
like Project to highlight the violation on a Network Diagram or on a
Gantt chart, so when I print it out people can focus on it.

Is there a way MS-Project will automatically highlight constraint
violations?

Thanks!

Hi,

Adding dates (constraints) like this causes all sorts of problems in a
schedule. for example invalid critical paths and the need to manually adjust
schedules rather than use links and have task re-schedule themselves
automatically.

A much better way is to add a Deadline (Project 2000+) to a task by
double-clicking it and looking at the Advanced tab or inserting the Deadline
column. A deadline on a task shows what the task's deadline is and affects
the critical path as well. If a deadline is missed, Project shows a red
diamond in the Indicator column. This will highlight your conflict for you.

Hi,

To show the impact of constraint violations on a Gantt Chart (and also the
deadline violations BTW)

In a custom Flag field (say Flag1) set the formula that it is Yes when Total
Slack<0
Then in Bar Styles create an extra line:

Name : Violators (for instance)
Appearance: select an aggressive color like Lime
Show For: select Flag1
From: Start
To: Finish

HTH
